Cool Red Light Therapy:

One of the most exciting recent developments in hair restoration technology involves the use of red light lasers to help slow the progression of genetic pattern hair loss and even stimulate the growth of new hair.  Many of our patients are asking questions about this new treatment option.

Here are answers to some of the questions asked most often about    Red Light Laser Therapy.

How Does Red Light Laser Therapy for Hair Regrowth Work?

Nearly fifty years ago, doctors discovered that a highly specific wavelength of red light (approximately 655 nanometers) not only helped reduce inflammation, but also helped accelerate the regeneration of damaged tissue.  Further research found that this same wavelength of light, when applied directly to the scalp, could increase the energy production around the unhealthy follicle cells, stimulating them from dormancy into an active growth phase while increasing the production of thicker and healthier hair.

Am I a Good Candidate for Red Light Laser Therapy?

Red light laser therapy has achieved excellent results in male and female patients of all ages, particularly in those that are in the early stages of hair loss and in women who are experiencing general thinning along the sides, back, and top of the scalp.  Because red light therapy works by stimulating hair follicles that have recently started producing thinner and finer hair. Hair follicles that have completely stopped producing hair for more than five years usually do not benefit from this treatment.

How is Red Light Laser Therapy Administered to My Scalp?

At The Hair Trauma Center Center, low level laser therapy is generally administered with a multi-paneled type device.  Patients seeking a more convenient option can also choose to use the in-home HTC LaserCap®, a discreet, portable device that can be worn underneath an ordinary baseball cap.

How Long Does a Treatment Take and How Many Treatments Will I Need?

An individual Red Light Laser treatment typically takes about 15-30 minutes, and needs to be performed two to four times per week, depending on the patient’s specific cause of hair loss and how far that hair loss has progressed.  The initial course of exposure usually takes 4-6 months to before results are evident, and additional “maintenance” sessions 1-2 times a week are strongly recommended in order to achieve optimal results.  In most cases, Red Light Therapy is used indefinitely as a supplement to topical and oral medications for hair loss, as needed.
